Cinemas cheer ‘strong’ weekend sales as screens reopen.

The UK Cinema Association said that the total box office for the week since cinemas were permitted to reopen last Monday was more than £10m.

“That was beyond many people’s expectations . . . We have seen an extraordinary number of sold out shows,” said Phil Clapp, the association’s chief executive, although he noted that capacity restrictions meant that screenings had inevitably sold out faster.

Cineworld, the world’s second largest cinema chain, reported on Monday that it had “a strong opening weekend” after it reopened its 128 UK cinemas last Wednesday.
